Choral Music Course Offerings

CONCERT CHOIRS

 

ADVANCED WOMEN’S CHOIR (Select Choir) Teacher: Fuchs      928916 Credit: one

Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisite: Successful Assessment and Placement

Students are offered advanced choral experiences for women’s voices. They develop both musicianship and proficiency in ensemble performance. Course content includes a study of choral literature, vocal techniques and sight singing. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. Rehearsals and performances, both in and out of school, are required. Students must also perform as part of the Advanced Combined Choir. Registration for this ensemble will be only through audition and at the selection of the director(s). This ensemble may be of a chamber music size ranging from 16 - 32 vocal members.

This course requires a student materials fee as listed in FCPS Notice 5922.

 

ADVANCED MIXED CHORUS (Symphonic Chorale) Teacher: Fuchs      926016 Credit: one

Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisite: Successful Assessment and Placement

Students are offered advanced choral experiences for mixed voices. They develop both musicianship and proficiency in ensemble performance. Course content includes a study of choral literature, vocal techniques and sight singing. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. Rehearsals and performances, both in and out of school, are required. Students must also perform as part of the Advanced Combined Choir. Registration for this ensemble will be only through audition and at the selection of the director(s). This ensemble may be of a chamber music size ranging from 16 - 32 vocal members.

MIXED CHORUS (Concert Choir) Teacher: Fuchs      926015 Credit: one

Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisite - None – No Formal Assessment Required, Open to ALL Students

Beginning level chorus will provide for the study of correct vocal production and development of musicianship through the study of appropriate choral literature. Course content includes a study of choral literature, vocal techniques and sight singing. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. Rehearsals and performances, both in and out of school, are required. There is no required audition for this course.

SPECIALTY CHOIRS and ENSEMBLES

 

INTERMEDIATE CHORUS (Multi Cultural Music Studies) Teacher: Fuchs    928515 Credit: one

Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisite - None – No Formal Assessment Required, Open to ALL Students

Beginning/Intermediate level chorus will provide for the study of correct vocal production and development of musicianship through the study of appropriate choral literature. Course content includes a study of choral literature, vocal techniques and sight singing. This course is currently offered as a one-year curriculum. Rehearsals and performances, both in and out of school, are required. There is no required audition for this course. This course will specifically study music of the world and numerous world cultures. Research and interactive learning are incorporated. Students will have a “hands on” experience that may include singing, instrumental performance, costuming, and movement.

JAZZ COMBO (Chantilly Combo) Teacher: Fuchs 924019 Credit: one

Grade 9 – 12

Prerequisite: Successful Assessment and Placement

The instrumental jazz combo curriculum emphasizes improvisation and styles of the jazz idiom. Content includes the study of blues scales patterns, and harmonic progressions innate in jazz music. Content also includes the study of appropriate jazz, pop, rock, Broadway, and contemporary show literature as well as rehearsal and performance techniques from the jazz and show idiom. Performances and rehearsals outside of regular school hours will both be required. Instrumentation of the jazz combo is at the discretion of the jazz instructor.

This ensemble performs as an individual group and as the accompaniment group for the Touch of Class Show Choir. This is a credited course that meets during 8th Period (after school).

SHOW & JAZZ CHOIRS

 

JAZZ CHOIR (Jazz Touch) Teacher: Cockrell      929616 Credit: one

Prerequisite: Successful Assessment and Placement

Students are offered choral experiences in the jazz genre. They develop both musicianship and proficiency in ensemble performance. Course content includes a study of choral literature, vocal techniques, sight singing and improvisation. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. Rehearsals and performances, both in and out of school, are required. Students must also perform as part of the Advanced Combined Choir. Registration for this ensemble will be only through audition and at the selection of the director(s).

SHOW/SWING CHOIR (Advanced - Touch of Class) *Cockrell  929615 (note section numbers - 3) Credit: one

Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisite: Successful Assessment and Placement

Students are offered an advanced choral experience in the appropriate genres. They develop both musicianship and proficiency in ensemble performance. Course content includes a study of choral literature, vocal techniques, sight singing and choreography. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. This group meets twice a week after school. As a co-curricular class, rehearsals and performances, both in and out of school, are required. This class has a cap of 20 girls and 20 boys. Registration and placement for this ensemble will be only through audition, and at the discretion of the director(s).

SHOW/SWING CHOIR (Intermediate - Magic Touch) *Cockrell   929615 (note section numbers - 2) Credit: one

Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisite: Successful Assessment and Placement

Students are offered an intermediate/advanced choral experience in the appropriate genres. They develop both musicianship and proficiency in ensemble performance. Course content includes a study of choral literature, vocal techniques, sight singing and choreography. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. This group meets once or twice a week after school. As a co-curricular class, rehearsals and performances, both in and out of school, are required. Registration and placement for this ensemble will be only through audition, and at the discretion of the director(s).

Students are offered an beginning/intermediate choral experience in the appropriate genres. They develop both musicianship and proficiency in ensemble performance. Course content includes a study of choral literature, vocal techniques, sight singing and choreography. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. This group may occasionally meet after school. As a co-curricular class, rehearsals and performances, both in and out of school, are required. Registration and placement for this ensemble will be only through audition, and at the discretion of the director(s).
