Leadership Opportunities

Leadership is a vital characteristic and part of any successful ensemble or organization. We believe that leadership is not about control or social status, but a quality of sacrifice and service to others. All students will have an active role and continuing opportunity to serve the choral department as leaders and participants throughout the school year.

Within the choral classes there are various leadership responsibilities depending on the class. There are opportunities to serve as Dance Captain, Section Leader, Class Historian, and Student Assistant. The positions of Dance Captain and Class Historian are positions nominated by the teacher and elected by the students in the class. Section Leaders and Student Assistants will be appointed by the directors/teachers as needed. All positions are usually established within the first nine weeks of school. Students interested in serving in a named leadership role will be required to submit a resume and short essay to the choral directors. A personal interview may also be required.

Student Representatives will be nominated in each class by the teacher and elected by the students to participate in the Choral Dept. Student Council. One student from each choral Music class will come together to make up this council. We hope to establish a routine of monthly meetings, where students will organize activities and events, plan for departmental service, and make contributions with ideas and active involvement in the continued growth and development of our choral music program. Regular student reports and organizational presentations will be made to all choral classes on a regular basis.

Class Librarians will be selected for each ensemble in the choral music department. These students will be responsible for the organization, distribution, and collection of music in their class through out the year. They will work with the directors to this end and will learn to use the computer software that servers as the database for the entire music library.

Student Committees may be established on an “ad hoc” basis, and students will be called upon to serve and lead those small groups. Committees will be established with specific goals and tasks in mind as particular needs arise.

Tri-M (Also see Student Services) - Students can apply for membership into the Tri-M Music Honor Society where numerous leadership and service opportunities exist. Tri-M is a nationally recognized academic honor society, and members work together in our school and community to serve and further promote music and music education in our society. You will find more information and detail about Tri-M in part XI of this handbook (Student Services).

Eugene B. Habecker

"The true leader serves. Serves people. Serves their best interests, and in doing so will not always be
popular, may not always impress. But because true leaders are motivated by loving concern than a
desire for personal glory, they are willing to pay the price."
